Guided Tour Ruhr 1   Duisburg city walk

Vikings, orders of knighthood and a geographer

Problably since olden times people lived at a ford of the Rhine where now the city of Duisburg lies. The Franks colonized the area between the 5th and 7th century. The city is affected by its special position at the junction of Ruhr and Rhine. But not only good things came up the Rhine. In the year 883 the vikings sailed the river up-stream and sacked the Duisburg.

But that was not the biggest catastrophe to happen to the city. The rich trading and Hanse town was suddenly cut from prosperity when the Rhine moved 4 km westward after floods at the beginning 13th century. The decline lasted till the 18th century when the first canals and basins were built.

With the incorporation of Ruhrort 1905 the basins of both cities developed to the largest inland port of the European continent. Industrial revolution changed Duisburg to a leading mining industry town. The big structural crisis in the 1980s at the Ruhr caused a fundamental reorientation.

On that varied city stroll You'll see the main sights of Duisburg's old town and Inner Harbour and hear about the vikings, orders of knighthood, sinful nuns, a famous geographer and the town's biblical origin.
