Guided Tour Ruhr 7 Duisburg-Ruhrort city walk
Schimanski, Haniel & Co
Ruhrort is on three sides surrounded by water and lies at the junction of Ruhr and Rhine. The town has its origin in a 1371 first mentioned customs-house on a small river-islet in the Rhine. In 1716 a part of an old bed of the Ruhr was turned into the first tiny basin as anchoring- and storage place and for shipyards. That was the beginning of Europe's largest inland navigation system - todays "logport".
The rapid development soon made a first planed town expansion necessary. 1756 the first house outside the town wall was erected by Jan Willem Noot, at that time the customs inspector of Ruhrort. His daughter Aletta married 1761 Jacob Haniel. In that "Packhaus" (packing house) - now the oldest remaining in Ruhrort - the fine Haniel Museum is located.
But Ruhrort is also well-known for the popular TV police inspector Schimanski. Our guide will bring You to all the interesting places between "Schifferbörse", "Museum der Deutschen Binnenschifffahrt" (Germany's largest and most extensive museum for the history of inland navigation) and the so-called 1000-window-house.
