Guided Tour Ruhr 8   Essen-Werden city walk

Pearl at the Ruhr

When Karl, King of the Franks (later Charlemagne), called the Frisian missionary Liudger (later St. Ludgerus) to christianize the hostile Saxons, the history of Werden began. According to legend Liudger founded in the year 799 a Benedictine Abbey on a small hill on the southern bank of the Ruhr. People settled down around the monastery and a town came into existence - Werden.

The city's history dates back to pre-Christian times. In what way the biblical ancestor Abraham is involved is one of the many interesting episodes on that guided tour. Walking along the many sights and traditional slate covered framework houses You get an idea why the locals speak of Werden as the "pearl at the Ruhr".

The town offers much: a long history, famous churches, old mansions, a nice landscape and pleasant cafés. It's a popular saying that "there's nothing better than Werden".
