Ruhr District Tour 1 Adventure Ruhr
Experience an exciting and changing region!
You'll visit the German Mining Museum in Bochum: Founded in the year 1930 it is the world's most significant mining museum. The underground visitor mine conveys a feeling for the miners' hard work.
The next stop is the Pit Zollverein in Essen: Closed down in 1986 and UNESCO World Heritage since 2001 Pit Zollverein is the Ruhr district symbol no. 1 and one of Europe's most remarkable industrial monuments. Shaft XII went into operation in 1932 as by far the largest of any colliery in Europe and "the most beautiful coal mine in the world".
After that the garden city colony Margarethenhöhe, also in Essen, is next up on the agenda: Built as a social project by the Krupp family between 1909 and 1938 this housing estate is deemed to be the best known and loveliest in the Ruhr dictrict.
The last highlight on that tour is the Villa Hügel: Situated on a hill overlooking Lake Baldeney lies the impressive Villa Hügel, the Krupp family residence from 1873 to 1945 with 269 rooms.
