Ruhr District Tour 30 Mining in Bottropm
Coal mining - that is the first what people associate with the Ruhr district. But nowadays you have to search to see some coal somewhere. There are still millions of tons underground but so deep that now mining in the former coal district is not profitable anymore. Some remnants that's all what's left.
Who really wants to see something of the once flourishing Ruhr area industry has to visit Bottrop. There is still a colliery (one of the last 5) and next to it a coking plant (one of the last 3) in operation where the black gold is hauled and processed to furnace coke for the large-scale production of iron and steel.
How coal mining shaped and changed the region, what is done with its legacy, how the colliers lived, you will experience at first hand on this walk which includes a visit to the only Malakoff shaft tower with built-in modern pithead as well as the fascinating panorama view from top of the Tetrahedron erected on an old pit heap.
